Baseball is a CHSAA 5A Spring Sport and at Lakewood, it is a competitive/try-out sport.
There are two school teams - Varsity and Junior Varsity, and one-two outside Freshman/Sophomore teams affiliated with the Lakewood Junior Baseball Association league. The selection process is based on skill, attitude, aptitude and scholastic eligibility. Athletes must tryout each year and selection on a team is not based on a student's grade level. Freshmen can play on the varsity team. Most of the team members play on competitive teams during the spring and summer, and there is off-season winter conditioning daily in the mornings before school, and Saturday mornings.
Varsity athletes are eligible to receive a "letter" in this sport based on achievement of performance goals and at the head coach's discretion.
Athletes are expected to participate in required practices, which are typically every day after school during the season, and games, which are after school and on Saturdays. There are additional fees associated with the baseball program. Also, the Varsity Team typically travels to Arizona to play games during Spring Break. The Baseball Booster Club provides fundraising activities to help off-set these additional fees.
Players are also subject to CHSAA’s eligibility regulations.CHSAA requires schools to run weekly eligibility reports and any athlete with two “F-failing” class grades will not play in a game the following week, but they are still expected to practice. Anyone with an “F-Fail” final class grade may be subject to eligibility restrictions.
