Lakewood High School's Cheer and Poms Team is a competitive Fall and Winter Sport. Cheer/Poms is a cut sport.
At LHS, there is a varsity and junior varsity team for both fall and winter sports. Team members are selected based on criteria found under the Cheer Application and Cheer Contract. The team is both Cheer & Dance and there is no separate team for poms. The varsity team cheers during the fall and winter season, and provides the halftime performances for many games, while the JV team only cheers.
The team typically hosts three camps during the summer for pre-season conditioning and learning material. Tryouts in April are for the full year squads. A uniform fitting will shortly follow. Tryouts are open to incoming freshmen through seniors. Once the fall season starts Cheerleaders are expected to practice every afternoon after school (Mon-Fri) and/or attend games as assigned (varies dependent on sport), and keep their grades up for eligibility.
Cheerleaders are eligible to receive an Athletic Letter for both the fall and winter season based on the coaches' discretion.
CHSAA rules require schools to run weekly eligibility reports and any athlete with two "F-Failing" grades will not participate in any meet the following week, unless they are able to show they have improved one or more grades to passing. They are still expected to practice.
The Head Cheer Coach is Kellie Coates. You can reach her at Kellie.Coates@jeffco.k12.co.us with questions.
